Spring Green Ventures Conference Announced
Please save May 20, 21 and 22, 2009 for our next green ventures conference, Jumpstarting the New Green Economy.
Our goal with the conference this year is to use it to power a movement to launch dozens of new companies to grow a different sort of economy – an economy that genuinely is socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable. Our present economy has proven that it is none of these.
Here are some ways we plan to bring this about:
The conference will include a much larger Green Expo and a Green Jobs Fair, a separate Green Invention 2 Venture Workshop, and a Best Green Practices Awards Luncheon, as well as a number of conference tracks dealing with various aspects of the new green economy, from local food to local currencies, from green venture investing to reinventing capitalism. We hope to bring together over 400 people, including state and federal policymakers, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, leading thinkers, and community activists to “think together” about what’s needed and how to achieve it.
Leading up to the conference in May will be a number of meetings and events co-sponsored with other individuals and organizations, including special ISE Breakfasts, roundtable discussions, and more.
We also have the opportunity to publish a book on the topic – dealing with the very practical issues involved in making the transition from traditional businesses and careers to more sustainable ones, and with the more challenging ones of reinventing the economic system so as to include both environmental externalities and social needs.
If you would like to become a sponsor, have a table at the event, or assist us in other ways, and use it to build or expand your own network of green contacts, please let us know. We have already set up a functioning conference planning web site, which we will be updating as things develop, and will make publicly available to those who wish to be involved in the planning process. Please send us your thoughts, interests, and ideas for the event.

The Incubator was officially launched on January 30, 2008, at a press event lead by Dr William M. Moore, Dean of the Silberman College of Business, and featuring a presentation by the Incubator’s first client, HydroCoil Power, Inc. Here is some of the media coverage:

The Incubator’s July 18 “stakeholder meeting” was outstanding, with a wide spectrum of individuals from business, government, and academia coming together to offer valuable ideas, suggestions, and support to the Incubator project.
In our view, the meeting was successful both in endorsing the concept of the Sustainable Business Incubator and in brainstorming issues, tasks, and opportunities for the team to pursue. It also challenged us us to face and deal with some not-so-easy issues, included the participation of key environmental groups, and expanded the participation of faculty, businesses, and the venture community in the project. More details on this will follow, but the steering committee plans to move forward with a full feasibility study, with strategic partnerships with other incubators and nonprofits, and has reached an agreement to sign up its first full client, HydroCoil Power.
The attached Stakeholder Meeting Notes (Word document) focuses on the key outcomes of the stakeholder meeting on the Sustainable Business Incubator.
One of the things that the participants requested was a list of the attendees, with at least brief profiles, so they could contact each other. When we looked at creating this, it became clear that it essentially represented the beginning of the SBI’s Sustainable Resource Network, and we most easily keep track of it online. So we’ve created a platform for this here:
SBI Sustainable Resource Network
Over a very short period of time we hope to populate this with information on the people, the companies, the projects, and the activities that will make the Incubator a magnet for start-ups with a sustainability focus.
The Network site is current open to all users, but certain entries and pages may be accessed only by the members of our Advisory Board. If you are interested in joining the Advisory Board, please email mpniewski@fdu.edu; we welcome people from a very wide variety of sectors to provide input to us and to our client members, and who in turn benefit from working with us.
In addition, here is a copy of the PowerPoint used at the meeting: July 18 Planning Presentation – and of the New Jersey Climate Impact Assessment that was referenced: New Jersey section of UCS Northeast Climate Impact Assessment.

The Sustainable Business Incubator at Fairleigh Dickinson is rapidly taking shape. With the support of the entire team at the Institute for Sustainable Enterprise, the Incubator has evolved from an idea proposed by a grad business student following the Ray Anderson seminar to a project and a public reality. The Incubator will – at least initially – be a virtual one, but one that leverages the resources of the university, and contributes whatever is required to foster and support a range of sustainability-oriented ventures.
This site, which contains portions of a larger internal working site developed by the project team, is being provided as an interim resource for a public planning scheduled for Wednesday, July 18, 2007.
